Happy to post the great news that the lab has been awarded a 5yr, $1.9million grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This major grant will fund work in the lab that is focused on understanding how genetic and environmental disruption of the circadian clock affects liver function, and how this contributes to obesity and metabolic syndrome. The clinical relevance of this work is premised upon the large body of evidence from labs around the world that shows disrupting the body clock, by shift work, jet lag, and disordered sleep -- in both human and non-human animal models -- contributes directly to metabolic changes that lead to obesity, diabetes, and other disease of metabolism. Understanding the potential mechanisms underlying these effects will be an important step to devise treatments or to inform policies on how to mitigate some of the impacts.
CONGRATULATIONS to the whole research group. This is a team effort that can only happen with the lab working together. Kudos!
